Well honestly, I am in no position to tell how a top-notch Harvard pass-out Lawyer who also happens to be the former First Lady, wrote a book about her trials and tribulations in life to become who she is at the moment. But I will still make an attempt.
Becoming is so much more than what meets the eye. Michele Obama recalls her days of being Michele Robinson with incredible detail and describes how she led a very normal middle class childhood with her parents and brother. She goes on to talk about how she was a determined girl, always ready to fight tooth and nail yet with elegance, to prove that she can get straight A's in school and get into an Ivy League College despite being black and coming from a side of Chicago which didn't really lie on the top of the best neighbourhoods.
There are some things that she emphasises about throughout her entire biography and they are :
The importance of having a well glued family - be it how her parents stood for her and how she intends to stand in for her daughters. Michele Obama comes from a tight knit family and believes that a family is the only pillar on which all your strength can be based. Because she thinks that no matter what happens to you, your family is always there to hold you up, and it is only your family who will be left to hold you up, since they never give up on you.
The absolutely mandatory presence of determination and grit - she believed that if you put your mind to something positive, it was hardly impossible to not achieve it. This was something she herself always tried to follow and implement as well.
The fact that education is of primary importance and nothing can top that - she always believed that proper education must always be given to children irrespective of whatever walk of life they come from, so that they can all grow up and turn out to be good citizens of the country and chalk out a career path of their own.
About how fitness is now an integrated part of her life - she never misses a workout, even when she hangs out with friends to rewind and chill and relax, she makes sure to get a workout in and eat healthy. Also if you wanna see her how she sticks to what she preaches watch her here, where she beats Ellen Degeneres in a Pushup challenge!
How she loves children with all her heart - she talks a lot about visiting schools and motivating children coming from all backgrounds, especially those kids who haven't seen the bright side of life. She purposefully went to not-so-popular schools to meet those children who didn't know what lay on the other side of education. She toured Oxford and other prestigous colleges with kids who weren't at the top of their classes to invigorate them and give them reason as to why they should work hard.
The joy of giving to the society - she left her enormous pay check at a notable law firm to work in the government just because she felt that the work their would be more 'real', that it would help people and help her achieve a sense of purpose in life
And finally, her view of her husband as an individual, a spouse, a father and a politician.
Also, the importance of hugs and how they can dissipate any kind of hard feelings between two individuals and form a strong bond between the two -she always made it a point to hug school kids and family members of those she met at the military hospitals. She is such a promoter of hugs that she even dared to hug the Queen herself! Who, moved by the warmth, pulled the First Lady closer in the hug.
She goes through every phase of her life in details and it's so smooth and chronological. She mentions each of the people she has associated with in each phase and talks about how they impacted her life.
Apart from what I mentioned above, Becoming talks about the strong desire within Michele Obama to use her delicate position of a First Lady to bring in changes that would bring in a lot of positivity and give new directions to the people of America, and not just be a simpering creature by the side of the President, doling out bright smiles and gentle handshakes to whoever she met. This belief in her to work for the people of the country made her launch a number of initiatives(read the book to find out, won't tell you just like that) for a healthier America. Moreover, in the face of the booming issue of obesity that America was facing, Michele Obama made a move to make sure that the major servers of food in the country shifted to healthier options while serving food to the kids of schools and colleges.
Throughout the entire span of the book there were moments when my eyes got a little moist and my heart was filled with love for Michele Obama, at her generosity, at her passion for people and how desperately she wanted to help those in need as she didn't want them to lead a life full of self doubt like she had done in her initial years.
Michele Obama is the real Disney Princess. She is the one to have a modest beginning in her life, yet climb the ladder up with nothing but kindness, determination and hard work to become a loved international figure. Hers is the story that should be taught to little girls so that all of them can strive to be better versions of themselves.
