Jangle Bells is a very odd mutation of Jingle Bells. The
story starts off with a ‘chai’ boy singing Jingelle Bell Jingelle Bell on the
24th of December, dropping off cutting chai on every desk.
The characters have no names. Very few dialogues. The eyes
are the actors here.
Namit Das is a gem. No other word can describe him better.
His acting is so natural, so fluid, so spontaneous that he leaves you amazed. His
eyes speak volumes. His life is a mess. He leads a dull life with constant
jibes from his boss and snipes from his office colleagues. Nobody gives a damn
for him.
But on the night of 24th December when he meets a Hindi speaking Santa Claus, he receives a magical gift on the vacant seat beside him.
Monali Thakur, joins his office from 25th
December, and takes that vacant seat beside him. She cuts a very pretty
picture.
Every night, the two stay in the office typing away at their
computers, even after others have left. Monali Thakur suddenly plugs in
her earphones and starts singing, 'Apke Nazron Ne Samjha Pyaar Ke Kabil Mujhe…' and Namit rolls his eyes thinking Yeh kaunsi nayi musibat a gayi… A few
seconds later, he realizes the mithas in her voice and his upcoming nights turn
better to such an extent that, he waits for it eagerly. The way he moves when
she sings ‘Piya tuuuuu…. Ab toh aa jaa..’ you cannot help but smile and admire
his skills.
Then the nights arrive when she stops singing at all. Not a
single hum from her voice. Namit is disappointed. They didn’t speak at all,
didn’t look at each other at all, but the nights were all that he waited for
after the gruelling day. A few nights go by, but nothing happens. And then one
night comes when he hesitantly starts singing ‘Sawar lu..’ and his neighbour is
stunned. The man who never smiled, never looked at her, never uttered a word
had started singing all of a sudden came as a big surprise. But when he
stumbles and goes out of tune (Psst: Namit Das is the son of reputed ghazal
singer Chandan Dass and grandson of renowned singer K.Pannalal), she smiles and
joins him to bring him back on track.
So Santa sprinkles some love in the air and sends her as a
gift so that she may Sawar le his life.
